An HIV-positive woman collects her anti-retroviral drugs in Lagos, Nigeria.
Four companies in Nigeria will soon begin local production of anti-retroviral drugs, the Country Director for UNAIDS, Bilali Camara said on Thursday, January 22.
Camara stated this in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The Country Director also added that the local production of the drugs would make it easier for people to receive treatment at a cheaper rate.
“We have commenced negotiations with four pharmaceutical companies; the companies have been certified by the World Health Organisation for the general manufacturing practices,” Camara said.
He also added that once the companies complete the prequalification processes, “they will commence the production of the anti-retroviral drugs in Nigeria.”
Other countries in West and Central Africa will also benefit from Nigeria’s production of the drugs as no company in the region has achieved the feat.
UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, is the main advocate for accelerated, comprehensive and coordinated global action on the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
