Officials Finally React Brutal Riot In Kirikiri Prison, Lagos

Scores of inmates were feared dead on October 10, 2014, Friday, in an attempted prison break at Kirikiri Medium Prison situated in Apapa area of Lagos, ThisDay reports.
However, this information has not been confirmed by the Nigerian Prison Services.
It all started from the reports that officials of the Nigerian Navy (NN) and the Kirikiri Police Station joined hands with officials of the Nigerian Prison Service to safeguard the gate and premises of the prison.

Then the reporters contacted Lagos State Police Command Prison Public Relations Officer, Biyi Jeje. He alleged he knew nothing of the incident and said he would find out.
However, several other attempts made to reach him again proved abortive as he was not taking his call nor respond to the text message sent to his mobile phone.
More detailed information emerged on the following day, in an e-mail by the spokesperson of the prison service, Ope Fatiniku, which was distributed by PR Nigeria.
The official confirmed a riot at medium Security Prison Kirikiri, which started around 13:30.  However, he emphasised that the situation was immediately put under control by the prison authorities.
The spokesperson denied that there was a case of escapee prisoner.
A probe panel has been immediately set up by the Acting Comptroller General of Prisons, Aminu A Suley, mni to investigate the reasons of the incident.
The official figure of inmates being injured was put at 7. Out of them, one died in an undisclosed hospital. Three inmates were treated and discharged from the Prison’s Clinic, while the remaining people admitted in various hospitals. The identities and details of hospitals were not announced due to security reasons.
