Al Jazeera reports that 2 of it's journalists who are supposed to be covering tomorrow's presidential elections have been detained in Maiduguri.
The duo, Ahmed Idris and Ali Mustafa,
who are both Nigerians are reportedly being detained in their hotel
room by government officials while their equipment was confiscated after
being questioned by the military officials on Tuesday.
The
Nigerian military has reportedly said the journalists were operating
without "protection, accreditation or due clearance", and confirmed
that the two journalists remain officially detained until further
notice.
It also said that both men were said to be
'loitering' in various locations, however they were actually detained
in their hotel rooms.
Idris and Mustafa were detained while reporting on the Nigerian forces fighting Islamist militant group, Boko Haram as part of Al Jazeera's special coverage on the upcoming elections.
The
news network has since demanded the release of 2 of its journalists
"without conditions", saying the pair were officially accredited by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja with the clearance to report from anywhere in the country during the entire election period.
Their detainment has drawn condemnation from the Committee to Protect Journalists with the group's West Africa representative, Peter Nkanga calling for the release of the journalists.
