Like every other activity on planet earth, Sports itself has its own share of casualties and tragedy.
Some caused by man’s carelessness and others by mere circumstances.
We highlight ten most horrific accidents to hit sports in order of their casualties.
- April 27, 1993 - Zambian National football team: plane carrying the Chipolopos of Zambia crashed just 500m before reaching shores in Gabon. All 30 on board died, including 25 players anf officials and five crew members. Kalusha Bwalya would have been a passenger on the plane but was saved by fate.
- December 8, 1987 - Peru football team: plane carrying the entire Peru team crashed, killing 23 oout of 43 casualties. All 23 players died.
- December 13, 1977 - Evansville Basketball team: plane carrying the football team of Evansville University crashed, killing 19 out of 29 casualties. All players and coachign staff were part of the dead.
- November 14, 1970 - Marshall University American football team: Plane crashes in Wayne County, killing 45 out of 75 casualties, killing most of the team players and other passengers.
- October 13, 1972 - Old Christians Rugby Club: Plane carrying rugby team crashes killiing 11 players out of 29 casualties.
- February 15, 1961 - US Figure Skating Team: Plane carrying the American figure skating team crashed enroute Czechoslovakia where the World Cup was to hold, killing 25 out of 75 passengers; all team members die.
- October 29, 1960 - California Polytechnic University American Football team: a plane carrying the entire football team of California University crashed killing 17 out of 22 fatalities.
- May 4, 1949 - Torino Football team: This made headline in Italy, plane carrying the entire team of Torino Football crashed into the reataining wall of St Paul's Basilica, killing 23 out of 31 fatalities, most of the dead being the squad members.
- February 6, 1958 - 'Munich Air Disaster': plane carrying the 'Busby Babes,' Manchester United's football team of the 50's crashed as it tried taken off a snow-filled runway in Munich, killing 11 out of the 23 on-board. Eight team members and three officials recorded dead.
- October 2, 1970 - Wichita State University American Football team: The Wichita state university chartered two planes for the trip to Utah but only made it; the other crashed on the way, killing 15 out of 31 casualties including 14 players and the coach.
