The 30 edition of the African Cup of Nations tournament will come to a close on Sunday with a vengeful clash between four –time winners, Ghana and four-time finalists, Cote D’Ivoire.
Having won the tournament for the first time in Senegal 1992, the Elephants went into oblivion with the last recognisable appearance recorder two years later in Tunisia 1994.
They stayed out of active competition for the Nations Cup until the era of Didier Drogba, Didier Zokora, Bonaventure Kalou, the Kones and others; who brought them back into the fearful team they used to be.
Under Frenchman Henri Michel, Ivory Coast reached the final of the Nations Cup in Egypt 2006, beating Nigeria 1-0 in the semi-finals before losing on penalties to the hosts.
From that point on, they maintained the fight in the continental championship, never exiting in the Group stage.
Two
years after, they finished fourth behind Ghana, having lost 4-2 in the
third place match. They’d already been beaten 4-1 by Egypt in the
semi-final.
A dwindled performance it became after that edition as they only exited the next one in Angola at the Q/final stages.
Six
years after their last final appearance, and five coaches in between,
local manager Francois Zahoui took them to their third final against Zambia when Eq.Guinea and Gabon co-hosted.
They lost on penalties to the Chipolopos, handing the Zambians their first ever Nations Cup title.
South Africa 2013 ended in a 2-1 quarter final loss to Nigeria.
Ghana, Egypt and Cameroon share the record for the highest wins in the competition.
The Black Stars dominated the earlier stages of the competition, with a consecutive win 1963 and 1965; 1978 and 1982.
They’d never appeared in the final again until 28 years where they lost to Egypt in Angola 2010
Sunday’s match-up is a clash between two of the best teams currently in the African continent.
Ties between these two have always been feisty with lots of scoring on some occasions.
The most goals scored amongst them was at the 1982 WAFU Cup which ended 5-5.
Cote D'Ivoire recorded the most goals from one side (0-3) at a 1973 AFCON qualifying game in played in Ghana.

Avram Grant would enter the history book as first manager to win the AFCON title for the Black Stars in 33 years.
