In 25 games between two West African powerhouses, Cote D’Ivoire and Ghana, a total of 67 goals have been scored amongst them; excluding penalties which account for 38 converted spot kicks.
Rivalry between these two started way back at the 1965 African Cup of Nations, that game ending 4-1 in favour of the Black Stars who at that time dominated Africa.
The
Black Stars continued dominance over the Elephants in the next two
games that followed in 1968 and 1970, with a 4-3 and 2-1 win.
The Ivorians only had their first win, 3-0 in a 1974 AFCON qualifier.
After that turn around, it became a keenly contested match-up for the two giants.
In
the 67 goals scored, Ghana leads with 35, four better than Ivory Coast
but the significant thing in the duel is that the Ivorians have always
won when it mattered the most.
In Senegal 1992,
the Elephants appearing in their first final, they beat the Black Stars
which had the best player on the continent, Abedi Pele sitting out due to suspension.
The match entered into penalty kicks and the Ivorians ran away 11-10 winners in Dakar.
23
years onward, history repeated itself in a different environment, with
different set of players, under similar circumstance and outcome.
Ghana dominated play like it was in 1992, Cote D’Ivoire held on till the last 120 minutes without a goal in either posts.
The game went into kick-outs like it happened 23 years ago and again The Elephants out-shot the Black Stars 9-8, similar to 1992 when they won 11-10: with one goal seperating the two.
