The UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Johannes Van-Der-Klaauw,
said the devastating conflict in Yemen has come against the backdrop of
an existing humanitarian crisis that is already one of the largest and
most complex worldwide.
He said thousands of families have fled their homes as a result of the fighting and airstrikes.
Van-Der-Klaauw
said ordinary families are struggling to access health care, water,
food, fuel and other basic requirements for survival.
He said the number of people struggling to have enough food has increased in Yemen from 10.6 million to 12 million.
"The
humanitarian community in Yemen continues to operate and deliver
assistance, including through Yemeni national staff and national
partners," he said.
He said to scale up assistance additional resources are urgently needed.
“I urge donors to act now to support the people of Yemen at this time of greatest need," he said.
On Thursday, April 16, UN chief Ban Ki-Moon called for an immediate ceasefire to clear the way for the start of peace talks and humanitarian deliveries.
Saudi Arabia and
eight Sunni fellow Arab countries are engaged in an air campaign
against Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen, the poorest country in the Arab
world.
