Panic broke out in a community in the Battambang province when health officials detected a local epidemic of the disease.
Investigations later revealed that the doctor, 55-year-old Yem Chrin had been using contaminated needles and operating without a valid license.
“We charged him with spreading the HIV virus to others, brutal murder and operating a medical service without a license,” Nuon San, the provincial court's chief prosecutor, told Reuters.
Yem Chrin provided cheap care to the poor and was well-respected but he admitted that he had been re-using syringes.
"He used the same syringes again and again," Deputy Police Chief Chet Vanny said.
Chrin was found out when children as young as two and elderly citizens as old as 80 tested positive for HIV.
