Cruelty of some people has no limits. 27-year-old Jordie Callahan and 32-year-old Jessica Hunt cooped up a mentally Shannon Eckley and her daughter for nearly two years in their snake pit. The "modern slaves" shop, cook and clean up after them and their dogs.

The couple controlled every aspect of their prisoners’ lives threatening to unleash their snakes, scorpions, lizards and spiders against them if they didn’t obey. Another instrument of manipulation was a video record showing Ms Eckley (who was forced to do that) beating her daughter that was made by the couple to blackmail her.

The woman got freedom only after deliberately getting arrested for stealing a chocolate bar and telling police she wanted to go to jail. She was taken to the police department where the details of her limbo life finally came to the surface, the case was immediately investigated and the couple appeared in court, Callahan has been handed a 30-year prison term with his partner Hunt yet to be sentenced.

District attorney Steven Dettelbach said: "Callahan, through his cruelty, sought to deprive the victims in this case of their dignity and their freedom. He failed… the victim’s strength ended up trumping his. As for the freedom part, now it is the defendant whose freedom will be taken, for a long time."
