Buhari also said that since the task of ensuring growth, job creation and equity, “is enormous, leaders must kick-start the process by cultivating a culture of prudent management of resources at all levels of government.”

The President said:
“The states are also encouraged to embark on projects that will meet immediate needs of the people taking account of available resources. I therefore urge council members to consider, as a matter of urgency, exploring efficient means of gradually liquidating all unpaid salaries of members of staff, which have brought untold hardship to thousands of families.”
“I would like also, as a former governor myself to remind us of the need for neighbouring states to cooperate closely on projects such as interstate and feeder roads, soil erosion, desertification and other developmental programmes. Our country is one and we who have the responsibility to run it must lead by example. As far as it is possible, there should be distance between politics and development programmes.”
Buhari also assured that the Federal Government under his administration would ensure more accountability and transparency in the distribution of Federal funds.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Bode George has said that the political career of All Progressives Congress (APC), leader, Bola Tinubu is over.
George also urged Tinubu to start preparing for retirement saying that the APC leader's political influence had grossly diminished.
The PDP chieftain made the comment on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, following the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as the Senate President, Punch reports.
“You know I predicted weeks ago that the APC is just a congregation of strange bedfellows. The most beautiful thing about what has happened is that Bola Tinubu’s political influence in Nigeria is coming to a sunset and it is about five minutes to midnight for him,” George said.
“If he cannot see this now, then it will be foolish of him. He brought in the APC national chairman and the vice-president and he thinks Nigeria belongs to him. So, he thought what he did in Lagos was what he could replicate at the national level and they have shown him that he cannot continue to be the lord of the manor,” he added.
“So, if he is wise, he will slow down. President Muhammadu Buhari, as an army general, has fought more battles than him and has an understanding of things. People like Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande in Osun have always been local champions. Now, they have come to the national level of politics and they are now learning the tricks that all that glitters is not gold.” George said.
“I congratulate Saraki and Ekweremadu. They understand what Nigeria is all about,” he concluded.
Saraki had emerged Senate President on Tuesday despite being excluded by the APC via an earlier conducted mock election which produced Senator Ahmed Lawan as the party’s choice.

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu has issued a response (of sorts) to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President.
Tinubu gave his response on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, while departing from the International Conference Centre in Abuja, where a peace meeting of the party was scheduled to hold.
According to Punch, the APC leader said: “I have no comment, I have no reaction.”
The party had chosen Senator Ahmed Lawan as its sole candidate for the Senate Presidency but Saraki went ahead to contest and won.
The peace meeting was called by President Muhammadu Buhari to settle the crisis within the party caused by the choice of National Assembly leaders.
Saraki however shunned the meeting and went for the inauguration of the 8th Senate, where he was elected, instead.
Buhari was also absent from the meeting.

National Assembly Crisis ‘APC can’t handle government at the centre,’ PDP says

The APC erupted into crisis over its choice of National Assembly leaders, a crisis that was further aggravated by the emergence of Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker respectively.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the recent crisis in the All Progressives Congress (APC) has shown the party’s inability to handle the affairs of government at the center.
The APC erupted into crisis over its choice of National Assembly leaders, a crisis that was further aggravated by the emergence of Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker respectively.
The PDP also criticized the ruling party saying that it is “suffering from the greed, lust for power and inordinate ambitions of the party's leaders.”
This was contained in a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh.
It reads:
"The crass inexperience so far displayed by the APC is a pointer that it is not adequately equipped to handle the affairs of government at the center.”
“Nothing can be more astonishing than the whining by the APC that the PDP at the last minute expressed its preference for Saraki and Dogara as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively, after it had earlier stated that it was not interested in the positions.”
“This calls to question the capacity, experience and skills of APC leaders on political matters and we have no apology whatsoever for their naivety. The APC is merely suffering the consequences of the greed, lust for power and inordinate ambitions of their leaders.”

“They should note that Nigerians have since moved ahead with the new leaders in the National Assembly and stop wasting their energy on propaganda and blackmails to heat up the polity.”
The APC had excluded Saraki and Dogara from contesting for the positions after choosing Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as its candidates via a mock poll.

All is not well in the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President despite being expressly excluded from contesting by the party.
This trend of events led Senator Remi Tinubu, wife of APC leader, Bola Tinubu, to refuse a handshake from Saraki during her inauguration on Wednesday, June 10, 2015.
Instead of shaking the Senate President like others sworn-in Senators, Mrs Tinubu simply showed Saraki her certificate and walked off.
Meanwhile the Lagos Chapter of the APC, which Mrs Tinubu belongs to, has called for Saraki to be sanctioned for his defiance of the party.

Saraki ‘I’m not returning to PDP,’ Senate President says

Senate President, Bukola Saraki has denied reports that he is planning to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Saraki said further that the rumours of his supposed return to the opposition party were started by “political adversaries who want to call a dog a bad name in order to hang it.”
This was contained in a statement released by the Senate President on Wednesday, June 10, 2015.
It reads in part:
“It is just cheap blackmail by political adversaries who want to call a dog a bad name in order to hang it.”
“And those making such desperate allegations should remember that I willingly left the PDP on matters of principles when the party was in power. Is it now that the party is out of government and in opposition that I will now return having worked so hard for my party in the last general elections?”
Saraki also affirmed his commitment to the APC, saying that he remains “a loyal party member and a leader of the party, committed to contributing my quota to building the party and helping it to deliver its promise of change to the people of Nigeria.”
Rumours of Saraki’s return to the PDP were started after he defied the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to contest for the Senate Presidency.
The APC had chosen Senator Ahmed Lawan as its sole candidate in a straw poll, a development which was rejected by Saraki.

Muhammadu Buhari President might scrap 12 ministries

Buhari might scrap 12 out of Nigeria's 31 ministries in a bid to reduce the country’s astronomical cost of governance.

According to reports, President Muhammadu Buhari might be planning to retain only 19 of Nigeria’s 31 ministries.
Buhari might scrap 12 ministries in a bid to reduce the country’s astronomical cost of governance, The Guardian reports.
Buhari, according to The Guardian, is convinced that he would not be able to deliver on promises made to Nigerians without shedding the weight of the federal bureaucracy and he number of ministries and agencies of government that consume more than 70 per cent of the federal budget.
In the new arrangement, some ministries might also be merged as follows:
  • Ministry of Interior (to include Police Affairs)
  • Ministry of Transportation (to include Works, Aviation, Railways, Waterways/Transport
  • Agriculture & Water Resources, etc.
  • Ministry of Information, Youth Development & Culture
  • Ministry of Trade, Investment & Tourism, etc.
Some of the ministries which might be scrapped include the Niger Delta Ministry, which may be replaced with the Ministry for Regional Development and the ministries of Women Affairs and Special Duties might also be scrapped.

Nyesom Wike ‘Governor has started wasting money,’ Rivers APC warns

The APC further accused Wike of obtaining a loan to bribe the PDP to hold its retreat in Rivers instead of in Akwa Ibom as originally planned.

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that Governor Nyesom Wike has begun spending the state’s funds on Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) activities.
The APC further accused Wike of obtaining a loan to bribe the PDP to hold its retreat in Rivers instead of in Akwa Ibom as originally planned.

The allegations were contained in a press statement released by Rivers APC Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone.
It reads:
“It is clear that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has concluded plans to fritter away the meagre resources of Rivers state as the party has decided to relocate its headquarters from Abuja to Port Harcourt.”
“During the retreat held by the chequered and fractured leadership of the party which took place in the state capital barely 72 hours after Chief Nyesom Wike was sworn-in as the Governor, the outgoing Senate President, David Mark had declared that the state has now become the headquarters of the opposition with the governor as the face of opposition.”
“We are not in doubt as to why Gov. Wike whose mandate is to be decided by the courts decided to host the parley for the party which lost favour with Nigerians after 16 years of dismal performance.”
“The governor who in the past accused his former boss and predecessor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi of using state funds to sponsor the APC has within 3 days of being in office, displayed his penchant for wasting government money at any given opportunity.”
“The reason for the choice of Rivers state as the PDP operational headquarters only goes to show that the treasury of the state has again been hijacked by the same cabal who have regrouped to continue with their old business of milking the state dry.”
“With the relocation of the PDP from Abuja to Rivers state, it is now clear to the PDP that Nigerians have rejected them after 16 years of power and the resulting economic mishap which our nation is faced with at the moment.”
Wike was caught sleeping during the retreat after accusing his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi of vandalizing the state Government House before vacating it.

Ayo Fayose Governor offers to ‘help’ Buhari choose minister

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose disclosed this in a statement released on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to allow him nominate an indigene of the state into the Presidential cabinet.
Fayose made the comments in a statement released on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.
The governor also said that he had written Buhari a letter on the issue and was hopeful that his response would be favourable.
“I shall be happy to nominate a worthy and competent professional, who can always oblige Your Excellency and your cabinet the benefit of a second opinion in the serious business of governance,” Fayose wrote to Buhari according to Punch.
The governor said he had written the letter based on the declaration made by Buhari that he would put the overall interest of the country above every other particularly political partisanship and bias.
Fayose was one of the champions of the hate crusade against Buhari during the election campaigns and single-handedly sponsored a newspaper advert which seemed to prophesy death for the President.

Sources close to Buhari are said to have revealed this adding that the President is wary of trusting anyone else with the position.

According to reports, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari might head the country’s petroleum ministry himself as part of his war against corruption.
Sources close to Buhari are said to have revealed this adding that the President is wary of trusting anyone else with the position, according to Reuters.
One of the sources, who chose to remain anonymous, added that “Nigeria’s oil sector is so dirty that nobody’s hands are clean enough to do the “surgical changes” needed.
“He will do it. It would be stupid to give that position to anyone else,” an associate of the President reportedly said.
Buhari has however not released his proposed ministerial list and media aide, Garba Shehu has urged Nigerians to be patient with the President as the process of choosing the cabinet is not one to be rushed.
Nigeria’s oil sector currently contributes over 80 per cent of the country’s revenue but is a “traditional fount of corruption” thus the country is robbed of much needed funds.
The President is not likely to be out of his depth as he has vast knowledge of the oil sector, having been head of the Petroleum Trust Fund under late dictator, Sani Abacha and oil minister under Olusegun Obasanjo.
Buhari would also not be the first Nigerian leader to take the step as Obasanjo did without a Petroleum Minister for most of the two terms he spent in office as a democratically elected President.

Also in consideration, according to Sahara Reporters (SR), is former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi.

The disclosure was made by SR via Twitter today, June 3, 2015.

“Former Gov. @tundefashola, Former Ekiti Gov. @kfayemi and Abubakar Mamu are being considered as Chief of Staff to Pres.@MBuhari,” the network tweeted.

The G7 summit in Germany will be Buhari’s first major international meeting as Nigeria’s President.

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to attend the G7 summit in Germany this weekend, his spokesperson has said.
The conference will be Buhari’s first major international meeting as Nigeria’s President.
The President will also visit Niger and then Chad for a two-day trip from Wednesday, June 3, 2015, to discuss the fight against Boko Haram.
“The president has accepted the invitation to attend the G7 summit. He’s expected to depart Nigeria on Sunday for the summit. It’s going to be a two-day trip,” Buhari’s media aide, Shehu Garba said on Tuesday, June 3, 2015.

Muhammadu Buhari President confirms SUN newspaper MD as spokesman

Before the announcement, Nigerians have been impatiently clamouring for President Buhari to appoint his cabinet members without delay.

President Muhammadu Buhari has officially announced the appointment of the Sun newspaper Managing Director/Editor-In-Chief, Femi Adeshina, as the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, while Mallam Garba Shehu will be the new Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity.
The President made the appointments this evening, Sunday, May 31 in Abuja.
Buhari also appointed Lawal Abdullahi Kazaure as the State Chief of Protocol (SCOP).
Before the announcement, Nigerians have been impatiently clamouring for the new Nigerian leader to appoint his cabinet members without delay, with many saying that his work began after he was sworn in on Friday, May 29.
Similarly, several people have already faulted him and his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo for not declaring their assets publicly, saying they have broken their election promise.
However, it is expected that Buhari will begin to announce appointments of key members of his cabinet in the coming days.

Muhammadu Buhari Why President hasn’t moved to Aso Rock – Aide

Shehu, who was formally appointed on Sunday, May 31, said that Buhari had not relocated into the villa because it was not yet suitable for habitation.

Media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu has explained why Nigeria’s new leader has not moved into the Presidential Villa, also known as Aso Rock.
Shehu, who was formally appointed on Sunday, May 31, said that Buhari had not relocated into the villa because it was not yet suitable for habitation.
The aide made the disclosure during an interview with Punch.
“As far as the President is concerned, the place (his official residence) is not ready yet. Workers are cleaning and refurbishing the place. Once the exercise is completed, the President will move in,” Shehu said.
Buhari was sworn in on Friday, May 29, and takes over from predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan.

Muhammadu Buhari ‘We’ll respond to President’s private asset declaration later,’ PDP says

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that it would soon issue a response to President Muhammadu Buhari’s private declaration of his assets.
Buhari and Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, reportedly submitted their asset declaration forms on Friday, May 28, 2015.
The PDP, said on Sunday, May 31, through National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, that the party would give the new leaders time to settle down before responding.
“We will allow President Muhammadu Buhari to settle down and address the promises made to Nigerians, we will talk on asset declaration later,” Metuh said.
The declaration was acknowledged by the Code of Conduct Bureau but some individuals and groups have called for Buhari and Osinbajo to publicly declare their assets.

Muhammadu Buhari 'Immunity or not, you'll face the law' - President speaks on corrupt leaders

Buhari acknowledged that the ‘change’ Nigerians yearning for will happen, but will be gradual given the level of damage in the past 16 years.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reinforced his government’s commitment to fight corruption and to ensure offenders face the full wrath of the law.
In a Vanguard compilation of comments and thoughts of Buhari, 48 hours before his inauguration as the new Nigeria leader, he reiterated the top issues his administration will tackle after assuming office – security, unemployment, fighting corruption, infrastructure amongst others.

He said the Goodluck Jonathan administration has grounded the Nigerian system, as he acknowledged the challenges he must face to bring about the ‘change’ Nigerians are yearning for.
He said, “the biggest message is to try and persuade the people that it is not possible to change the state of affairs now. It took 16 years to get to that state of affairs. Nigeria earned more revenue during that period than what it earned from 1914 to 1999.

“We used to have Nigeria Airways, Nigerian National Shipping Line, Nigeria Railway. Where are they now? Where is the infrastructure that is commensurate with what we earned in-between, what is on ground? That is how efficiently the PDP managed Nigeria in the last 16 years."
Buhari assured that no stone will be left unturned in the fight against corruption, noting that not even immunity clause will aid the escape of anyone who is fingered and found guilty by the law.
He stated, “we will make sure that we get cooperation from the judiciary so that people who worked against the law are prosecuted, especially those who have lost their immunity, even those who think they have immunity because this is the best way to stabilize the system.
“People must not benefit from being lawless. You can’t be in a position by virtue of the Constitution, subvert the Constitution and continue to enjoy the privileges offered by the Constitution. I don’t think that will be acceptable by the APC.
“So, whether you are in the opposition or the government, you have to behave. I think that is the way we can make progress.”

According to reports, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), Ifeanyi Ubah burst into tears on Thursday, April 30, 2015 over the defeat of President Goodluck Jonathan in the March 28 election.
Ubah broke down and wept profusely while at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to Sahara Reporters.
The incident is said to have occurred during the presentation of a report on the elections to Jonathan by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation.
Ubah, a former governorship aspirant for Anambra State, reportedly started crying when members of the PDP were speaking on the President’s loss.
He was said to have continued weeping until he was ushered out of the venue.
TAN was the major group that spearheaded the re-election campaign of the President and at one point claimed to have gotten 12 million signatures from Nigerians who wanted Jonathan in office for a second term.
Jonathan will handover to President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, 2015.

Muhammadu Buhari We’ll prosecute security personnel for electoral offences – President-elect

Buhari said further that ballot snatching and other offences which were allegedly committed by soldiers would not go unpunished.

President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari has said that his administration will prosecute all security personnel found guilty of committing electoral offences in the recently held elections.
Buhari said further that ballot snatching and other offences which were allegedly committed by soldiers would not go unpunished.
The President-elect also stated that he had already instructed that all such offences be documented by governors of the states affected, especially Edo, Imo and Rivers States.
Buhari reportedly stated this on Thursday, April 30, 2015, during a meeting with members of the South East Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Defence House in Abuja.
The President-elect is set to be sworn into office on May 29, 2015.

Goodluck Jonathan President doubts Buhari’s victory

Jonathan stated that election results from some areas showed scores that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) couldn’t possibly have gotten.

President Goodluck Jonathan has cast doubt on the victory of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari in the March 28 presidential elections.
Jonathan stated that election results from some areas showed scores that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) couldn’t possibly have gotten.
The outgoing President stated this on Thursday, April 30, 2015, after receiving a report of the elections from the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
“The problem is not whether we lost the elections, that is history, but how do we consolidate our party and move forward? If we are committed and we work hard, definitely the PDP will bounce back,” Jonathan said.
“The PDP is still the dominant party. If you look at the results, the difference is just 2.5 million votes and if you look at the areas where it is perceived that the PDP scored so low, the PDP couldn’t have got those kinds of scores but the elections are over, so the country first. It is not as if Jonathan alone made the sacrifice, it is all of us. I made the pronouncement but some of us are paying the price,” he added.
“The key thing is that we must continue to unite, as a party; we must continue to work hard so that as we go into subsequent elections in 2019, 2023 and so on and so forth, the PDP will continue to come up strong. Even in the interest of the nation, we need the PDP,” Jonathan said.
Jonathan also said that he conceded defeat to Buhari in the interest of and on behalf of the PDP.
